New York – U Are the Best!
Someone once said ‘ Life Is Change Management’ – no city epitomizes that better than New York City – every time I visit that city it fills me with a fresh burst of oxygen – the life, the hustle and bustle – as they say ‘New York is something else’.
My first days/months in New York in 1980 were memorable in more ways than one – sitting on the steps of the Manhattan Public library recently, I was just amazed at how things have changed – the Times Square of old is such a distant memory – hats off to New York – the world’s 'numero uno' city continues to show the way. A city which means so much to so many people – a city where countless dreams are born every day and a city that almost ‘forces’ one to dream – the skyscrapers staring at you screaming ‘ the sky is the limit’, the fresh 'off the plane' immigrant (I was one of those in those days) ever eager to please and ‘fit in’, the often-direct bus driver who is ready to snap if the exact fare is not kept ready, the taxi drivers who are ready to share their words of wisdom on survival skills, the executives moving up ’n ’down those elevators trained almost naturally to look ‘nowhere’, the ‘devotees’ of some guru or the other doing their ‘own’ thing, the ‘pretzel’ vendors so very professional and the occasional street kid hawking the daily newspaper at half-price, only to be outdone by the folks distributing ‘free yogurt’ – and guess what - I was one of those who dreamt ‘success’ – and have come a long way since – the travail from One Penn Plaza (above Madison Garden) to where I am sitting today (in Mumbai) has been a wonderful round-trip – those memories of struggling to get a break, spending the day walking across Manhattan, pounding countless doors for a entry level position may seem far away but guess what – it was New York that did it for me and today as an American I can say proudly – New York – U are the best!
